Lord,
The day is ending, and I come to You as I am.
The work is not all finished. Some questions still have no answer. Some moments were good, and others are difficult to carry into the night.
Thank You that I do not need to arrange the day into a perfect story before I speak with You.
Thank You for today’s gifts
Thank You for the life You gave me today. Thank You for food, shelter, movement, thought, and every person who offered kindness.
Bring to mind a gift I nearly missed because I was busy: a familiar voice, a useful conversation, a moment of laughter, a task completed, a place to sit, or strength for one more step.
I receive these things without pretending the day was easy. Gratitude and grief can stand together before You.
Thank You most of all for Jesus. My hope does not rest on having performed well today. It rests on Your mercy.
Forgive what was wrong
Search my heart gently and truthfully.
Forgive the impatient word, the selfish choice, the truth I avoided, and the good I knew to do but neglected. Forgive me where fear controlled me and where pride kept me from listening.
Show me whether an apology, repair, or changed action is needed tomorrow. Keep me from using prayer as a way to avoid responsibility.
At the same time, protect me from vague shame that says everything about me is bad. Your conviction leads toward confession and new life. Because of Christ, I do not have to punish myself through the night.
I confess what I know and receive Your forgiveness. Where I still do not see clearly, continue teaching me.
I release unfinished work
The task will still be there tomorrow. Tonight, help me stop.
I release the email not answered, the room not cleaned, the plan not completed, and the decision still being considered. Remind me that the world is held by You, not by my constant effort.
If there is one action I must remember, help me write it down and leave it for morning. Keep my mind from repeating it as though worry were useful work.
Thank You for the limit of sleep. I am a creature who needs rest, and I do not need to apologize for that need.
Care for the people on my mind
I place the people I love in Your hands.
Watch over the one who is traveling, working at night, sitting beside a hospital bed, grieving, caring for a child, or facing a lonely room.
Give wisdom to doctors, nurses, emergency workers, and caregivers. Bring safety where there is danger. Bring truthful support where someone is being harmed. Bring companionship where isolation has become heavy.
I cannot remain awake enough to protect everyone. You do not sleep. Teach me to entrust them to You without becoming indifferent to what I can do tomorrow.
Meet me in the memories of this day
Some moments keep replaying. I wonder what I should have said. I imagine what another person thinks. I rewrite the conversation and hope for an ending I cannot create tonight.
Give me grace to stop rehearsing it.
If I was wrong, help me make it right when the time comes. If I was misunderstood, give me patience. If another person harmed me, lead me toward safe boundaries, wise help, and freedom from revenge. Do not ask me to call evil good.
Hold the memory while I rest. I place it in Your care for these hours.
Quiet the fear of tomorrow
You know the appointment, responsibility, and uncertainty waiting in the morning. I do not know the outcome, but I know I will not enter it without You.
Give me tomorrow’s wisdom tomorrow. Tonight, give me permission to lie down.
When my thoughts predict the worst, return me to what is true. I am here now. I have taken the action available today. Help can be requested. Your love in Christ has not changed.
If anxiety or sleeplessness continues, give me humility to seek medical or professional support. Let me receive such care without shame.
Give my body rest
Relax the places where I am holding tension. Slow my breathing. Help me put away the screen, noise, or habit that keeps the day going longer than it should.
Where pain makes sleep difficult, provide appropriate relief and endurance. Where a baby, illness, work schedule, or caregiving duty interrupts rest, supply strength and bring people who can share the load.
I do not demand a perfect night. I ask for the rest that is possible and for Your presence in every waking moment.
Remain near in the darkness
Psalm 4 says, “In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.”
This is not a promise that no hard thing can happen. It is trust in the God who remains present when human watchfulness ends.
If I wake during the night, let a simple prayer return: “You are here. I am in Your care.”
The darkness is not empty to You. The morning is already known by You. Nothing I face is outside Your sight.
Prepare me for a new beginning
When morning comes, let me receive it as mercy rather than a continuation of tonight’s fear.
Give me courage to do what is needed, patience with my limits, and attention to the person in front of me. Help me carry forward what was good and leave behind what You have forgiven.
Thank You for staying with me through this imperfect day. Thank You that Your faithfulness does not end when my eyes close.
I release my work, my relationships, my body, and my future into Your hands.
In peace, I lie down.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen.
Frequently asked questions
What if I fall asleep before finishing?
That is not a failure. Prayer is relationship, not a task to complete. Rest in the truth that God knows what you meant to say.
Can I use this prayer after a very difficult day?
Yes, but adapt it honestly. If you are unsafe or in crisis, seek immediate practical help rather than using prayer as a reason to remain alone.
What if I wake with anxiety?
Use a short prayer, write down any action for morning, and care for your body gently. Seek qualified support when anxiety or sleeplessness is persistent.
